Advanced Academics Programs

Fairfax County Public Schools offers a continuum of advanced academic services for students K-12 that builds upon students' individual strengths and skills and maximizes academic potential for all learners.

Our Riverside ES Advanced Academic resource teacher (AART), Kameke Mojica, collaborates with the school staff to determine the appropriate level of advanced academic services. Parents may refer their child for advanced academic services or get additional information on the screening process or advanced academic opportunities at Riverside ES by contacting Mrs. Mojica at @email. Ongoing observation and assessment ensure that student needs are being met.

Access to Rigor, Grades K-6

The first level is provided to all students in kindergarten through grade six and consists of talent development lessons that are designed to teach critical and creative thinking skills. These lessons allow our students the opportunity to access parts of the Advanced Academic Programs Curriculum to develop their talents and interests. We also use Critical and Creative Thinking lessons (CCT) with all students. Parents may also practice these strategies at home during family conversations and activities.

Subject-Specific Services, Grades K-6

Identified students receive AAP curriculum lessons in the general education setting in areas of their academic strength. The AART collaborates with classroom teachers to provide additional challenges through lessons and resources that extend and enrich the Program of Studies. Students are identified by a local school screening committee. Screening for this level of service is ongoing throughout the school year.

Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6

Identified students receive AAP curriculum lessons in more than one academic content area. The classroom teacher and the AART work together to provide enrichment and extension using the AAP curriculum. The program has increased depth and complexity in several content areas. Identified students are challenged through models and strategies designed to extend and enrich the Program of Studies in the four core subject areas. Screening for this level of service is ongoing throughout the school year and students are identified by a local school screening committee.

Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8

Students may be found eligible for placement in Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs through a central selection process. These students receive AAP curriculum lesson full-time.  The programming has increased depth, complexity, and pace in all academic content areas. Screening for this level of service occurs in the fall for students who are new to FCPS and in the spring for all other students. Please check the Advanced Academic Programs website for deadlines each year.
